FORTEZZA GIRIFALCO

Located atop the hillside town of Cortona in the Tuscany region of Italy, the Girifalco fortress has existed as a symbol of security since its construction in the 15th century. As part if the cultural association’s (Cortona on the Move) plan to reestablish the location as an international arts academy, the design proposal for the Capitano building of the Girifalco fortezza focuses on restoring the existing spaces while celebrating the pas within a modern framework. Creation of new vertical connections and increased occupancy space not only improves function and circulation, but also improves flexibility and safety. New features highlight historical elements while the introduction of modern technologies and materials provide a contemporary perspective to view the buildings legacies of the past.
